New Science Lab Development

It is my great pleasure to share with you that the science laboratory at my school is developing very well.
Developing a science laboratory was a shared dream created by an Unley High School Science Maths teacher and me, when I visited Unley High School in 2011 and observed some practical science lessons. Teaching science in a laboratory was a new experience for me and I became excited about this.  After much discussions with the Science, Maths teacher and Year Level Co-ordinator Charlie Marino, together we created a shared dream.  To construct a science laboratory at Blue Sky Public School and to develop suitable science programmes for The Blue Sky students. This dream became bigger when it was shared by both the Unley High School and Blue Sky Public School Communities. It was also skilfully guided by the late David Rusk who contributed plenty of energy to make this happen.
At Unley High School a group of students and staff united and pioneered a committee The Blue Sky Unley High Link Committee which accepted the goal of making the dream become reality. They shared this with Unley High School Student Voice Committee who have now taken this committee as one of their responsibilities.  After much detailed communication, planning and sharing of ideas by Skype, email and phone as well as resource collecting, fundraising and strong effort with the challenge of transporting and sending items, the goal of developing the laboratory was started. Now the laboratory is in good use with many resources that we have received through the generous efforts of Unley High and Pulteney Grammar Schools. Thank you to these schools and to Art for supporting the science laboratory.
Thank you also for all of the help from The Blue Sky Unley High Link Committee started by   Charlie Marino and the Unley High School family. This committee raised funds to build the laboratory and has also sent us microscopes, plenty of useful science equipment, science books and dictionaries. They raised more funds that enabled us to buy racks, chairs, aprons, safety goggles and other equipment. They also sent laptops and more funds to buy a projector screen and other useful teaching items. The Blue Sky Unley High school Link Committee also spent time researching and developing simple science experiments that were inexpensive and effective. This was suitably named the David John Rusk Blue –Sky Unley High Science Project” to honor him for his guidance in this project. This committee developed a bank of experiments now in use at Blue-Sky
I would like to thank the Unley High School family for all of their help in making this possible.
At this time I am pleased to write that The Blue Sky Public School Science Laboratory is the most developed school science laboratory in this area.
In early January we were pleased to welcome Charlie from Unley High to Blue Skye Public School. During his visit Charlie presented a Book of Encouraging Messages to the Blue Sky family from the Unley High School family written by the staff and students of Unley High.
During his visit Charlie taught science in the new laboratory. The children and the community enjoyed the rocket balloons constructed and tested by the students. Another group studied air pressure and flight and constructed paper helicopters which they released from the balcony of the fourth floor. Everyone enjoyed this experience and it was wonderful to see the helicopters flying high in the sky. Teachers, students, parents and neighbors came out to watch the flying helicopters. My students are very happy and were satisfied for having experienced practical science.
Thank you to Charlie for offering some training to the teachers on the topic of motivation and behavior which the teachers found useful.
Thank you to everyone who supported this project.

Introduction

My Dream for Blue Sky Public High School

like to provide a service to my community that has some very special needs. The education of children in Nepal is still very poor. I want to help in this area.
Before I started my school, I had already been involved in the teaching field. I wanted to do more to improve education in Nepal, so I decided to open my own school. I established a primary school, Blue Sky Public Schoool,  in 1996. It is a private school not supported by the government. It depends on student fees, donations and sponsorship.
The 50% parents are economically are very low. They cannot send their children to school. Some are construction workers. Some go to door to door to clean dishes and wash clothes. Some has opened small vender of green vegetable and corns on the street. Some has saloon and some has small grocery shop. They cannot afford I money for good rooms. So they rent or make home in riverside. So I planned to bring them at my school providing scholarship and sponsorship. They are very happy at BSP School.  It is English medium school and trying its best to provide a quality education.

I had a dream to establish a school with good facilities in Nepal. But I could not do anything to develop the facilities because all the money I received from school fees were used for teacher’s salary and house rent.
Nowadays, I have very different facilities with the help of many friends in Australia and some other countries. I would like to invite here to all friends for any kind of support  that you can do. I want to share my journey since then.

School Library Project

David Rusk, retired principal and the former adviser of the ministry of education, South Australia visited my school for the  first time in  2004. He is adviser of Blue Sky Public School now. He sent Margaret to visit my school in 2005. There were no books at the school when Margaret Congram, from
South Australia, visited my school. She remarked and bought some books for my school. Then Margaret Greatrex from UK sent some books for the children.
Now we have more than ten thousand books in the school library. David Rusk has sent more than eight thousand books
(fiction, non  fiction, dictionaries, atlases, picture books, teachers books etc )  from South Australia with help of the South Pacific Aid Book shed and the Rotary Club of Brownhill Creek. Charlie, from Unley High school in South Australia also supports me to buy some dictionaries.
Katie , Alish, poicta, Lovren, Shannon and  Jordie  from Melbourne supported our students  to buy some books. I am very grateful to them. Margaret Congram and Ralf  from Germany supported the school to buy some books cases and carpeting. The members of Rotary club of Brownhill Creek sorted the library books and put them into levels and subjects.

We have invited to community too to share library. Some students of other school are taking books from Blue Sky Library. In the future, I would like to shift my school road side so that public could get easy entry and read books in the library.

What I need Now For Library
I need more books, but at the moment I also need some book racks , mats , sofa and a movable display stand where I can put new books only. I need more fiction books for all levels. My students are from 2.5 years to 17 years old. I would like to make my library a fantastic place where students like to spend more time reading books. I would like to keep a machine (Bar code reader) to enter the names of who borrows books from library. I have invited people in my community to borrow the books from my library. I am providing  a reading champion award to the student who reads the most numbers of  books from in a whole year of an academic session .The champion ship award is encouraging students to read more books from the school library.I would like to extend the room of library to keep more books. So I need some furniture for it.

It great pleasure to share you that Pulteney Grammar school has sent some LCD moniter and 9 computers. The computer lab has been very developed now. We need some furnitures now. I would like to thank Pulteney Grammar School.

New Development

When Margaret Congram visited my school the second time, she came with a plan. She bought some second hand Pentium 2 computers with help of Blackwood Rotary Club in 2008. I had no computers before then. My students were very happy to touch and play with the computers. Then Blackwood Primary school supported me to buy some second hand Pentium 3 computers. Now we have 8 laptops. Charlie  Marino  and Unley High School family. Three are  laptops by Pulteney Grammar School.

I want to have 20 laptops for my new computer lab. I have got 5 and I need 15 more. I need some furniture  as well  to make an effective and fantastic lab.

Science Lab

Present

I had some computers in the computer lab and books in library but nothing was till 2011 in the science lab. I was worried how manage it, because the science lessons were not being done practically. I was very impressed when I visited many science labs during my visit to South Australia . I bought science materials when  I came back from SA. I could make some furniture as Jenny from Pulteney Grammar School in South Australia sent some money for racks for the science equipment. Then I talked to Charlie  Marino , the coordinator from  Unley High School, SA  about my dream of science lab. He was very positive for it. He sent 11 microscopes and some equipments  with help of his school family. Then he built a students committee to support Blue Sky . He coordinated  to raise  fund to buy chairs, racks and so many science equipments. He visited my school in January, 215. He taught science lesson and made many experiment too. The science lab has fantastic now.

Smart Board
When I visited the Australian school, I saw smart boards for the first time. It is good technology to teach students. I talked to Charlie about a projector. He is teaching science from SA through Skype. He raised some money to buy a projector and sound system.
What I Need
I want to use smart board or projector at least up to year three class.

SPORTS

There is no big field, however the students can play basket ball , ping pong and badminton. I have a ping pong frame. There is basket ball board but it is so old.
What I need
I need a new ping pong board and basket ball back boards and some basket balls. I have received some skipping ropes from Woodend primary  School and Pulteney Grammar School ,SA. I need some badminton rockets too.
Music Instruments
At the moment, I only have 4 madals (drums). To develop my music program, I would like to have drum set, violins, guitars, key boards.
I am very hopeful to realize my dream. At the beginning I had nothing except students. Now I am getting many things. I hope I will make my school a fantastic school not only up to national, but also to international standard.
I Wish God bless my school to get many helpful hands. I am thankful to God too.
